Halloween Party Update
Greetings, earthling.
We are at T-minus three days to the Halloween party, and I’m riding the pre-party worry/excitement rollercoaster. I’ve also gotten a surprisingly bad cold at what feels like a pretty inconvenient time. So, right now, I’m posted up in/on some alien couch pillows I made last night (do not look too closely at the zippers tysm), thinking through what’s done so far and what’s left to do in the next few days, aka trying to give myself a blog-based pep talk.
Not to get too much into it, but I feel like I’m just starting to army-crawl my way out of the typical blinding panic I get whenever I do something that is creative and involves other people. It makes me sad that I get so convinced that I’m going to make just a horrible, embarrassing mess. Thank goodness I have very patient and loving friends and family who convince me that it is unlikely / impossible that my nightmare will come true. So, I’m going to keep riding that upward trend with a list of things that are going well so far.
HERE’S WHAT WE’VE GOT:
—> We’ve got lightweight lamé silver wall hangings up and shimmering. I honestly can’t tell if they look cool or homemade, but either way, they make the walls reflective and dynamic, so I dig it. I’ll take pix at the party - I hope. EEK.
—> We’ve got translucent, wavy layers of party-bunting-esque flags combined with some little LED fairy lights criss-crossing the ceiling of the living/dining room area. My thinking was to make it look like the underside of a creature with tendrils, and I think it’s turned more into an alien attempting to decorate for a birthday party for their earth friend. Good enough!
—> We’ve got a truth-or-dare / random prizes gumball machine that I will either put a tinfoil hat on or cover in slime. This little beauty was a Facebook Marketplace find - a result of a very nice, wholesome, and not scary interaction with a stranger in a liquor store parking lot. Last weekend, we had a couple of friends over who helped us come up with truths and dares that walk the fine line of being fun and maybe a little pleasantly stressful without being creepy / making people feel clumsily coerced. I will let you know how that goes - LOL. We wrote a truth on one side and a dare on the other and put them into these little gumball-sized capsules - and then put little animals and slime into some random ones. I also found little green LED light balls which fit in there nicely too, so the gumball machine will be a source of strange light. I hope they look like alien eggs :D. Also one capsule contains multivitamins.
—> We’ve got an amazing, unexpected feature that will be all over the party: ALIEN PHOTOS + ART. My partner Matt is an A.I. art aficionado and has been making hilarious, creepy, convincing alien-centric photos and posters to put up around the house. So far, we’ve got over 20 pictures printed and are swapping them out with our regular ones. It is very unsettling to me how detailed and “perfect” these pictures are - the textures and lighting and imagination, which is weird to say, because it doesn’t have a brain, freak me out. He’s working on a Titanic poster and all of the 20+ iterations he’s shown me have been eerie and romantic. In a few, alien Jack and human Rose ARE the iceberg 🤔
—> WE’VE GOT A BUBBLING WATER FEATURE. I won’t say more because I don’t want to jinx it and because I’m getting tired, but I went from “I have officially given up on this dream” to “I have officially realized this dream” in the course of ten minutes on Tuesday night and it was like the arts and crafts equivalent of skydiving. The solution: empty advil bottle, heat gun, transparent vinyl tubing, SAY NO MORE. I will say more at a later date.
And what do we have left? …two costumes to make, one basement to decorate, one house to clean, one night of food and drinks to prepare…and it will be fine. I’ve realized this time through how many people are so happy to help me, and I thank my lucky stars that whatever stubborn DNA is inside me has finally worn down enough to begin accepting it. So, I think it will all be okay.
Peace out for now 🖖
